05 Oct Top 5 Most Famous Steel Structures In The World
Steel is one of the strongest, most staple materials in the world and has proven most popular with structural steel fabricators for creating height defying buildings all over the world. It was towards the end of the 19th century and into the start of the 20th when steel became widely used, and since that time we’ve seen some tremendous accomplishments in architecture
Impressive buildings made using structural steel fabrication
Today we’re going to be looking at 5 of the most famous steel structures in the world, so we can get lost in the sheer beauty and imaginative shapes of these unique buildings. Take the journey with us as we look into the adventurous journey of steel.
Structural steel work at its best
The widespread use of structural steel is everywhere around us, and more so if you live in a city. The construction of skyscrapers only became possible with the advent of this versatile metal, and even with concrete being the main material, it’s the steel that provides the support, and no concrete structure is possible without it. It not only allows the walls to be higher, but if glass is used, a steel frame helps strengthen it.
Some of the most famous buildings are made from steel, and although some of them were built nearly a century ago, many are still standing strong. Evidence if any were needed of the durability and strength of steel, and a testament to the skills of the structural steel fabricators who helped to create some of the most iconic buildings ever built.
The Burj Khalifa
It’s the world’s tallest building so naturally has to be included. Situated in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa contains a jaw dropping 163 floors and is nearly 830 metres in height. Its design is known as ‘bundled tube,’ and has a modest amount of steel used as opposed to other equally opulent buildings of a similar design.
Empire State Building
This list wouldn’t be complete without the mention of this building, built at the beginning of the 1930s by skilled structural steel fabricators, and is still a pretty impressive building. It’s finished off with Art Deco at the top and amply illustrates the versatility of steel.
Robert Bruno Steel House
Again in the United States, the Robert Bruno Steel House is in Ransom Canyon, Texas, and is imaginatively and beautifully designed with the smoothest and most elegant of curves. It’s probably one of the most fascinating constructions, and visually looks as if it’s been carved from sand. Again, this building shows the versatility of steel.
The Eiffel Tower
One of the earliest, built in the latter part of the 19th century, the Eiffel Tower is easily one of the most recognisable buildings in the world, and certainly one of the most imaginatively built. Although it was built to last for only 20 years, the Eiffel Tower has certainly lasted much longer. It’s beautiful shape that starts out wider than it ends at the top is a testament to imaginative architectural design.
China World Trade Centre Tower III
This magnificent building has 81 floors with 30 elevators to reach them. It boasts 4 underground floors and is over 1,000 ft. tall. It is similar in appearance to the two World Trade Centre Buildings in New York which were destroyed in 2001.
The China World Trade Centre is Beijing’s tallest building and is used as a hotel and office. There are nearly 300 5-star hotel rooms, and the office space uses just over 50 floors. If you’re hungry you’ll find a restaurant with an observation deck on the 79th and 81st floor.
Don’t worry about the time it takes for the elevator to get to you a meeting, because apparently it can reach a breath-taking 10 metres per second to get to the next floor.
We hope you enjoyed our look at some of the most famous structural steel buildings in the world. It is a testament to the wonders of steel and what you can do with plenty of imagination and a material that lends itself to just about anything you want to do with it.
